Four Tigers named to all-star game
This year’s McDonald’s Lehigh Valley All-Star football game is set for Thursday, June 16.
Four Northwestern players will represent the Tigers in the game, including Andrew Sorensen, Dylan Snyder, Harry Hall and Brandon Miller.
“It’s really an honor to be named to this game,” said Sorensen, who will play defensive end in the game. “You work hard during the season for every play. To be recognized for all the hard work makes you feel good.”
The game is slated for Thursday at Nazareth’s Leh Stadium.
While many of the players in the game will go on to college careers, Sorensen will suit up for the last time as he plans to focus on academics at DeSales University after stellar high school football and wrestling careers in New Tripoli.
“I wanted to focus on academics,” he said. “I’ve always just wanted to end in high school.
“It’s bittersweet. It hasn’t really hit me yet that it’s going to be the last game ever. I’m trying to play each play to its fullest and just enjoy it.”
Sorensen was a four-year starter for the Tigers. He played defensive end as a freshman, moved to tight end as a sophomore, went back to defensive end as a junior, and played both offensive center and defensive end last fall.
He ends a six-year football career in a game where he is playing not only for himself and his teammates, but also for the Ronald McDonald charities that the game benefits.
“It’s really neat,” said Sorensen. “It’s not just about the football players. It’s about the bigger picture, about raising money for the Ronald McDonald House. It makes you feel like are playing for a purpose.”
All four Tigers will get to play one more game with some of their high school head coaches on the sidelines. Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder, who played in the McDonald’s Game as a Tiger in 1998, will be at the helm of the team and Northwetsern line coach Dave Kerschner is also on the staff.
Snyder fondly remembers playing in the game before heading off to Lehigh University.
“It’s just a special game,” said Josh Snyder. “You’re now teammates with a lot of rivals and a lot of guys you’ve read about in the paper. To see them now be on the same team and coming together and bonding, I still have friends that I played with that I still talk to. That’s just one of the learning experiences for these guys that’s neat to see.”
