Burke, Iobst, Clark make CC softball
Emmaus High School softball players Brooke Iobst, Madi Clark and Cassie Burke have been named to the Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup Softball Tournament team, which will be coached this year by Parkland High School assistant Blake Morgan.
Former Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup coach John Eyer, who was the head coach for 11 years, will assist at some practices. Eyer is also the Emmaus High School softball head coach.
The Carpenter Cup Classic is a Philadelphia Phillies sponsored tournament, which will be played the week of June 20 at FDR Field in Philadelphia, featuring teams comprised of high school sophomores and juniors from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Iobst, a junior, Clark, a sophomore, and Burke, also a sophomore, are all newcomers to the Lehigh Valley team.
Tryouts were held on May 29 and June 8.
“I know I’m going to college in a year, and I felt ready for this tryout,” said Iobst. “It’s a huge opportunity, and I didn’t know if I’d make it or not, but you never know unless you try.”
At the end of the June 8 tryout, Morgan read the list of names of the girls who made the team with Iobst’s name toward the end.
“My heart was racing. I was so nervous,” she said.
Once Iobst’s name was called, there was a mixture of relief and excitement.
Also on the Lehigh Valley roster are Northampton players Hallie Muffley and Jillian Muthard; Parkland players Aubree Fritzinger, Chelsea Morgan and Shauna Frank; Whitehall’s Ashlee Brosky, Kay Solderitch and Mackenzie Guzy; Liberty’s Kristin Kaleycik; Bethlehem Catholic’s Jess Indelicato; Salisbury’s Lilia Crouthamel; and Stroudsburg player Winnai Hoyt.
“The tryout was like a normal practice, and a lot of girls still had their seasons (Whitehall and Parkland), so it was laid-back,” said Iobst. “We had an opportunity to show what we could do.”
Throughout the tournament, players will also have an opportunity to showcase their talents to college coaches.
“I’m looking forward to playing with girls I’m used to playing against, and showing my talent to college coaches,” Iobst said.
Lehigh Valley’s first game on June 20 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
