LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Volleyball earns EPC silver

It was a familiar setting for both teams last Wednesday night at Easton Area Middle School.

For the third consecutive year, the two teams battling for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference title were the top two teams in the league all year. And once again, top seeded Parkland got the better of second seed Emmaus in three games (25-15, 25-20, 25-18).

It was the second time this season that the Green Hornets (15-2 overall) were swept by the Trojans (17-1 overall).

“I was a little disappointed because we had nothing to lose,” said Hornet head coach Ken Dunkle. “Don’t take anything away from them, they’re a great team and it shows why they’re number one in the state. But we made too many errors and gave them a lot of their points. It was something we should have had cleaned up.”

Some of those mistakes that Emmaus made helped Parkland stake claims in each of the three games.

The Trojans forced several Emmaus errors early in the first set, but the Green Hornets stayed within striking distance. Backed by a solid service game from Bryce Galloway and a pair of Andrew Hillman kills, Parkland went on a 13-5 run to close out the set.

“Almost in all three games, we started really strong,” said Dunkle. “But then we had too many unforced errors and it got away from us there at the end of each game. We had our opportunities, and it showed in the scores, but they just have so many ways to score that it is tough to defend, especially when we are making some mistakes.”

Senior Trevor McLean had four of his eight kills in the second set to keep Emmaus alive. But the Trojans front line helped them pull away from a close game.

Once again in game three, the Green Hornets played well early on, and actually led at times. But once the Trojans pulled ahead, they made sure that they would not be threatened, and once again came away with a league title.

Dunkle knows the teams may be seeing each other again soon.

“Overall I am happy with the way we played,” Dunkle said. “We made some errors here and there, but we were in each game. I put in Stephen Reynolds, a freshman, to see what he could do, and he played really well so I am happy about that. If it goes our way, we’ll see these guys again with another title on the line.”

Emmaus took down Wyoming Valley West in three games in the District 11 quarterfinals and was slated to play in the semifinals on Tuesday in hopes of reaching Thursday’s title match.
