Parkland ends Hornets’ season

Even after losing 11-3 to Easton in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinals a week before heading into the district tournament, the Emmaus boys lacrosse team did not worry or panic.

The Hornets knew what they had in front of them. They had been there before, and had won. The District 11 playoffs had treated them well in previous years.

But Parkland did not care that the Green Hornets (12-9 overall) were the three-time defending district champions.

It was the third meeting this season between the two teams, with each splitting a game.

Six fourth-quarter goals put the game out of reach as the Trojans (13-7 overall) beat Emmaus 14-6 last Thursday evening at Parkland High School in the District 11 Quarterfinals.

“It’s disappointing because we’re one of the first teams sent home, and this is the earliest that we’ve ever been sent home under me,” said Hornet head coach Scott Ketcham. “They were the better team tonight. We weren’t as ready or prepared as I had hoped.”

The Trojans blitzed the Green Hornets, outscoring them each quarter.

The Hornets had beaten Parkland the last time the two teams played against each other. Both teams lost in the EPC semifinals, so they had the same amount of rest and no one really had momentum.

After jumping out to an early 4-2 lead after the first quarter, the two teams were more defensive and selective in their shots. There were half as many goals in the second quarter, but the Trojans still doubled up the Green Hornets, leading 6-3 at halftime.

It was a similar scene in the third quarter as the two teams combined to score three goals, and Emmaus was behind 8-4 heading into the final quarter.

But any chance for a comeback was gone as Parkland scored six of the eight goals in that time frame, and advanced to the District 11 semifinals to face Easton.

“I’m disappointed for the seniors, who had to play in their last game tonight,” said Ketcham. “It was a good season. I just wish we could have played more games.”

Junior Tyler Corpora had a team-high four goals fro Emmaus. Collin Mason and Collin Tucker scored the other two goals. Corpora and Mason both had assists for the Green Hornets.
