Lorene M. Southworth

Lorene M. Southworth, 89, formerly of New Tripoli and Allentown, died May 20, 2016, in Kirkland Village, Bethlehem.

She and her husband George F. Southworth were married 61 years last October.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Blanche (Johnson) Myers, who had resided in Springfield, Delaware County.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hood College, Frederick, Md.

After graduation, she went to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where she was one of the first two women to receive their Master’s of Business Administration degree.

She worked in the personnel department for Rohm and Haas and then became the human resource director for WB Saunders Co., Philadelphia.

She then worked in the personnel department for Crown, Cork and Seal, Baltimore, Md.

After moving to the Lehigh Valley, she was a substitute teacher in the Northwestern Lehigh School District for eight years.

She was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Allentown and a Girl Scout Troop leader in New Tripoli.

A member of the Lehigh Carbon Community College Board of Trustees, she also served as treasurer and vice president.

She loved to travel and did so extensively with her husband, visiting more than 60 countries.

She enjoyed reading, woodworking and cooking, and loved spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Lorene “Lori” C. Southworth and her husband Gary Greb of Baltimore; son George F., Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Blue Bell; and grandchildren Griffin, Gillian, and Tyler.

A memorial service at Kirkland Village will be announced at a future date.
