Emmaus’ kick off summer event June 5

The Emmaus Recreation and Entertainment Commission will host its annual Community Day and Kick-Off-To-Summer event noon to 8 p.m. June 5 at Community Park.

The event, which is free to the public, will feature food, information from community organizations, crafts, large inflatables for children, demonstrations, athletic events and music. At 6 p.m. the musical group, “The Large Flowerheads,” will perform 1960s music and classic rock in the Arts Pavilion.

Emmaus has hosted summer concerts in the park for over 36 years. Summer concerts during June in Emmaus’ Community Park are 5 p.m. June 12, “Inch & the Echoes;” 6 p.m. June 19, the “Josef Krobath Band” and 5 p.m. June 26, entertainer Tommy Zito. Concerts are free and held rain or shine.

Free Zumba classes continue 9 to 10 a.m. every Saturday in the community park’s Arts Pavilion.

The Emmaus Community Pool was scheduled to be open noon to 8 p.m. June 4 and 5 and to open daily June 11 through Aug. 28. However due to the recent reported damage to the pool mechanism, the pool opening schedule is uncertain.

Movies Under the Stars will be held June 24 at Emmaus Community Park. For information, visit www.emmausent.com.

The Emmaus Library Summer Reading Program, “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!” begins June 20 and runs until Aug. 20. The programs will be based on sports, adventure and games. Book logs will be available June 20. The opening program at the library, 11 E. Main St., will be 2 p.m. June 21 and features music, singing and other activities. Summer story time for all ages will be 10:30 a.m. June 22 and 29. Block parties are 11 a.m. June 7 and 4 p.m. June 28. There will be a Literary Lunch Jr. noon June 28 and Literary Lunch noon June 29. Teen Read is 7 p.m. June 9.

Other programs include board and card games for fourth graders and older 2 p.m. June 23; miniature role-playing games for sixth graders and older 11 a.m. June 25 and Books and Barks 6:45 p.m. June 23. The family film matinee is 2 p.m. June 18, the family film is 7 p.m. June 30 and the adult movie matinee is 1 p.m. June 30. Phone or check the website for movie titles.

Emmaus’ community-wide yard sale will be held 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 4 with a rain date of June 5. No permit is required.

Also taking place on June 4 are two races: the Funk 5 Miler event (10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) sponsored by Run Lehigh Valley and the Cradle of Liberty Adventure Race (6 a.m. to 9 p.m.), a 60-mile charity race to benefit the Gift of Life Donor Program. This race begins at the parking lot near the South Mountain Gateway Trail.

Emmaus Kiwanis is holding its 43rd annual pancake breakfast festival, 8 a.m. to noon June 5 at Emaus Fire Co. #1, Sixth and Broad streets. The breakfast features all-you-can eat pancakes and sausage along with complimentary breakfast beverages. The festivities include raffles, face painting and more. Tickets can be purchased from any Kiwanis member or at www.EmmausKiwanis.org. Children under 10 eat free. Take-out is also available.

Emmaus Farmers Market is held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. Special events in June are “Grow Your Garden” June 5 and “Let’s Grow Together,” a children’s program 1 to 2 p.m. June 12 and 26. The June 3 meeting of the Emmaus Senior Citizen’s group will be a sing-along. Musician Fred Arnold will entertain at the June 10 meeting. The group meets 1 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The June 17 meeting will be a pot luck picnic (covered dish) at noon at the church. The Citizens Fire Co., 1017-21 Pennsylvania Ave., will hold a community carnival 6 to 10 p.m. June 8 through 11.

There is no Emmaus Borough Council meeting scheduled June 6. Council will meet 7 p.m. June 20 at borough hall, 28 S. Reminder: Due to the Memorial Day holiday, place refuse/recycling out June 1 for June 2 pickup.

Emmaus’ annual Flag Day celebration will be held 6 p.m. June 14 at the Community Park Arts Pavilion. The guest speaker is Emmaus High School Social Studies teacher John Gallagher. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and veterans will participate in the flag presentation. The Emmaus Chorale will perform several patriotic songs and there will be a sing-along. The highlight of the program is the fifth grade students reading their winning poems and the eighth graders reading their winning essays for the Flag Day contest. The GFWC PA Woman’s Club will induct its new officers at a June 1 tea. Officers are: Sandra Stanton, president; Ruth Kemmerer, 1st vice president; Dolores Falco, 2nd vice president; Peg Young, recording secretary; Roberta Daubenspeck, corresponding secretary; Debra Kahler, treasurer and Doris Heim, financial secretary.

The program for Emmaus Garden Club’s June 7 meeting is “Make Your Garden Rock!” Bob Stamper will explain how to create rock gardens on slopes, on flat ground and in troughs. The group meets noon with the program beginning 12:30 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, North Second and Cherokee streets.

The Emmaus Historical Society will hold a summer picnic 5:30 p.m. June 15 in the Moser Pavilion at Emmaus Community Park. The society will provide meat and drinks; members are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. If planning to attend, phone the museum at 610-966-6591. The next session in the summer film discussion series at the Emmaus Public Library led by local filmmaker Stephanie Gardner is 6 p.m. June 29. The group will view “The Conformist” (1970). During the discussion Gardner will explore the artistic choices filmmakers make. Registration is not required.

Plaudits to all the volunteers who participated in this year’s Earth Day clean up. The group picked up litter on 4.8 miles of roads and one half-mile of railroad embankment and filled 132 30-gallon trash bags and cleaned up two tires.
