‘Build it and they will run’

Roger Williams, representing Friends for Lower Macungie Township Dog Park and 7,300 dogs who reside in Lower Macungie Township attended the May 19 Lower Macungie Township Board of Commissioners meeting to discuss the status of the dog park.

The township approved construction of a dog park at Camp Olympic; however, the Lehigh County Conservation District needed a permit modification. The change is expected to take approximately three to six months and will add additional costs.

Two other sites were proposed for a dog park– Spring Creek Estates and Creamery Park. Noise buffers, road access, water and restrooms are some of the necessities needed for the park.

Williams said dogs are social creatures and prior to being domesticated, dogs traveled in packs. With domestication, their social skills still exist.

Dog parks are generally quiet because dogs exercising are usually not barking. A dog park is for socializing and exercising.

Council decided on two dog parks with one at Camp Olympic and the other in one of the other parks. Commissioners will visit the proposed sites to determine the best place available.

Traffic improvements at North Krocks Road and Route 222 are in place with new traffic patterns.

A portion of Mill Creek Road will be renamed as well as Mill Creek Spur. These roads will return to their original names.

A skate park has been created. Kids were riding their skateboards on the tennis courts at the community center. It was determined the bottom courts were not used for tennis courts so the township has converted these courts to a skate park.
