Cunningham hauls in two league medals

Trevor Cunningham’s laid out a plan prior to the 300-meter hurdle event last week at Whitehall High School. For the most part, he was able to follow that plan and produce one of his best runs of the season.

Cunningham ran a 41.32 and secured a silver medal in the event, one of two medal-stand appearances for the Northwestern senior at last week’s Colonial League Track and Field Championship Meet at the Zephyrs Sports Complex. Cunningham also ran the 110-meter hurdles and placed third.

“I was afraid I was going to come out a little slow,” Cunningham said. “I wasn’t feeling great today. I was trying to stick with Job Goodman of Wilson.

“I knew he would be in my right lane, so I knew he would be ahead of me,” Cunningham said. “I wanted that so he could push me. He did push me, but it wasn’t enough.”

While it wasn’t enough for Cunningham to pass Goodman, he still finished as the second-fastest male in the 300 hurdles, an event he just picked up this year.

“I went over with my right leg on all of them like I wanted to, and everything was going good,” Cunningham said. “I went over with the wrong leg on one of the hurdles coming down the straight away, and that threw off my steps and I slowed down a little bit.”

Three other individuals and two relay teams on the boys’ side also medaled for Northwestern.

Chet Karpyn threw a mark of 47 feet, one and a half inches on his fourth throw of the shot put event, a feat good enough for third place last Tuesday. He was only outdone by Bangor’s Cam Strohe and Southern Lehigh’s Andrew Rochon.

“It means a lot to me,” Karpyn said. “It’s the best throw I’ve ever had. I beat my personal record by over a foot.”

A few weeks ago, Karpyn faced much of the same competition in the Allentown School District Invitational. He’s made plenty of strides since then, gaining ground on the top competitors like Strohe and Rochon.

“I was ranked fourth,” said Karpyn, who placed fifth at the ASD Invitational. “I threw against some of these guys at the Allentown Invitational and I kept up there with them. I knew anything could happen.”

Once districts wraps up, Karpyn is hoping he has yet another medal credited to his name, and perhaps a trip to states.

David VanBlargan cleared a height of 11 feet, six inches to capture bronze in the pole vault event, while Andrew Goodolf clocked a time of 2:03.41 in the 800 meter run for fourth. Both the 1600- and 3200- relay teams placed fourth as well to earn medals.
