Steel FC unbeaten last five matches

Bethlehem Steel FC extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-1 victory over FC Montreal Sunday afternoon at Goodman Stadium.

A pair of penalty kicks in the 78th and 84th minutes proved to be the difference for the home side to push them past their Canadian counterparts.

Captain Ryan Richter evened the game at 1-1 with his PK in the 78th, while Derrick Jones put away the game winner from the spot six minutes later.

“I knew I was going to score,” said Jones. “I didn’t panic. I went for the ball and was able to score. We just keep going. We’re not ready to lose, we’re just going to keep going.”

Sunday’s win pushes Steel FC to 3-2-3 on the season, giving them 12 points through eight matches, good enough to have them seated eighth in the USL’s Eastern Conference standings.

“Coming away from that I thought we got what we deserved,” said Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke. “It took us a long time to get going today, but I’m happy and the players are happy. They responded well to a difficult conversation at halftime.”

Steel FC outshot Montreal 16-to-9 on the afternoon, but the visitors had three chances early in the second half to extend their 1-0 lead, which came from a David Choiniere goal midway through the first half.

Being able to stave off an early mess in the final 45 minutes helped salvage a result for Burke’s side.

“Yeah, there easily could’ve been three goals in the first five minutes of the second half,” Burke said. “That’s when frustration kicked in, but I don’t think we were ever worried. We knew it was coming, we knew it was a matter of intent in the final third and committing numbers in the box.”

Bethlehem Steel FC returns to action next Sunday when they travel to Harrisburg City as they take on the Islanders at 6 p.m.
