New track for PHS

Parkland’s school board has approved various expenditures for the 2016-17 school term.

The high school track will be resurfaced for $239,000, on a bid awarded to American Athletic Courts Inc..

The track will be made of a rubbery, springy product which will complement the artificial turf recently installed on the playing field.

Other bids awarded at the April 19 meeting were: $99,724 for copy paper, $45,796 for art supplies, $54,260 for furniture to meet the needs of full-day kindergarten and redistricting, and $18,732 for replacement of the burglar alarm at Cetronia Elementary.

The board also granted approval for removal of two modular classrooms at the Fogelsville Elementary at a cost of $10,975.

Superintendent Richard Sniscak said the modulars have been used for storage and are not in good enough shape to be refurbished.

New modulars have been authorized at the school to provide space for increased enrollment and full day kindergarten.

In the matter of technology, the board approved an agreement with Microsoft for an annual subscription to all Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Server applications at a cost of $64,740.

School board directors also approved an agreement between PenTeleData and the district for point-to-point transport from district sites to the Internet at a base rate of $1,300 per month for a five-year term.

In other business, the board was advised by Stantec consultant Michael Thompson that the high school will be at full capacity by 2024.

He recommended an addition at the front entrance of the building.

Sniscak noted spaces at the rear of the building between the wings might also be an option.

Thompson reported the oldest section of the Schnecksville Elementary School should be removed and reconstructed sometime between 2025 and 2030.

Sniscak said the bricks are not in good shape in the 1920s original portion of the school.

Thompson introduced a new term, Learning Commons, for what is now called a library or media center.

His comments concluded the year-long feasibility study conducted by Stantec.
