George H. Happel

George H. Happel, 86, of South Whitehall Township, died May 3, 2016, at home with his family.

He and his wife, the late Helen M. (Sickonic) Happel shared 60 years of marriage and later retirement in the Naples, Fla., area.

Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Frederick Happel and Margaret (Micco) Happel Cavany.

Before retiring in 1994, he was the president of Orlando Diefenderfer Electrical Contractors and previously worked in sales at Westinghouse Electric Co., 1947-55.

Following graduation from William Allen High School in 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War.

After returning home, he graduated from Penn State University in 1960.

A member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield, he was enrolled with and a team leader for Cursillo Retreats, was head of Catholic Charities, past council president of DeSales University, and a member of Knights of Columbus.

While residing in Naples, he was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Along with these organizations, he was on the board of Casa Guadalupe and chairman of the board and board member to Sacred Heart Hospital.

He held civic membership in the Kiwanis Club, and membership in, as well as, receiving leadership and Eagle Scout awards from the Minsi Trail Boy Scouts.

At Lehigh Country Club, Allentown, and Stonebridge Country Club, Naples, he enjoyed his love of tennis and golf, and was an exceptional dancer with the Cotillion Ballroom Dancing organization.

His survivors include a son Mark A. of Mertztown; daughter Beverly A., wife of Robert Kistler, of Allentown; sister Grace Elsenbaumer of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and grandchildren, Justin, Anthony, Brandon and Jenna.

Contributions in his memory may be made to his church, the Sacred Heart Foundation or L.V. Therapy Dogs, and mailed to the funeral home, 1625 W. Highland St., Allentown, PA 18102.

Arrangements were made by Trexler Funeral Home, Allentown.
