Steel FC settle for draw

Bethlehem Steel FC registered their second straight scoreless draw at Lehigh’s Goodman Stadium Sunday afternoon against Louisville City.

The draw gives Steel FC a 2-2-2 mark on the season and extended their unbeaten streak to three games with the result, good enough to put them in ninth place in the table with eight points through six games.

The home side had a chance in the 18th minute when Fabian Herbers beat several defenders and played Eric Ayuk with a through ball on goal, but Louisville keeper Greg Ranjitsingh rushed the play and killed a scoring opportunity.

While Steel FC had their chances, goalkeeper John McCarthy kept the team in the contest throughout the afternoon.

He denied a Sean Reynold’s header in the 31st minute. McCarthy then stonewalled USL leading goal scorer Chandler Hoffman’s opportunity on goal just before the half.

In the 76th minute, McCarthy made another huge save to deny Mark-Anthony Kaye’s shot from a corner kick.

McCarthy registered seven saves on the day, as Louisville City outshot Steel FC 15-to-7.

“Two shutouts is great, back to back,” said McCarthy. “I am happy about it, to be down here, it’s a great opportunity for me and I am just trying to make the best of it.”

Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke compared his team’s most recent scoreless draws against Charleston and Louisville.

“I think this one had more life to it, certainly on both sides of the ball for them and for us, but happy to keep clean sheets,” he said. “You have to remember we have a 17-year-old center back out there and we just played three of the better teams in the East in my opinion, or historically anyway. So to keep two clean sheets and only concede one in the game before that off a set piece, I am very happy with that.”

Steel FC hit the road this weekend when they face Orlando City B on Saturday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be available on the USL official YouTube channel. The team’s next home game will be on May 15 against FC Montreal at 4 p.m.

Louisville City goalie Greg Ranjitsingh controls the ball with the help of defender Sean Reynolds as Bethlehem Steel FC forward Leo Fernandez attacking effort is denied in the second half of the scoreless game.
