Hornets hammer Golden Hawks
When the Emmaus boys volleyball team lost to Parkland two weeks ago, it was the first setback in a regular season match for the Green Hornets. They didn’t let that turn into more, however. They have won their next two, and dominated Bethlehem Catholic for the third win in a row since. Emmaus took the first three games of the set against the Golden Hawks 25-16, 25-11, 25-9 last Thursday evening at Bethlehem Catholic High School.
The Green Hornets had no problem dispatching Becahi in a sweep. They gradually wore them down, with the winning advantage increasing each successive game.
“The tough part about a night like tonight is you want your kids to keep pressing, but you don’t want to be obnoxious about it and run up the score,” said head coach Ken Dunkle. “The big thing we did here was worked on consistency, and were able to try some different things. We also didn’t want to let up even if we thought we had them down. They did a good job of that tonight.”
The Green Hornets attacked up front at the net and used their athleticism to put the Golden Hawks away. The Emmaus offense had little trouble with scoring points, and defending Becahi’s attack.
It was more of a welcoming site for the Green Hornets, as they have not lost a game from a set since the Parkland match.
“I think we have a solid team and a lot of leaders,” said Dunkle. “We didn’t let that loss get us down, we kept moving forward from it and wanted to better ourselves each game. Except for Parkland, we haven’t really been pushed too hard, so they always have to be mentally ready each game.”
Junior Carson Landis tallied 12 kills, and fellow classmate Jacob Rumfield added five kills. Sophomore Cameron Parsons had 28 assists in the win.
Emmaus played in the Quakertown Invitational over the weekend. The Green Hornets went 3-0 in pool play, defeating Upper Dublin, Archbishop Wood and Delaware Valley.
They took down Upper Dublin once again in the semifinals, but then fell to Council Rock North two games to one in the final.
Emmaus faces two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference opponents this week in Freedom Tuesday and Allen Thursday, before finishing off the regular season next Tuesday night against Dieruff on senior night.
