Boys tennis winds down exciting season
It’s been a busy week for the Whitehall boys tennis team as they had league and district tournaments sandwiched around their regular season schedule.
The league tournament for doubles was to resume Monday. They were waiting to see if Nick Rohn and Max Nuscher at No. 2 doubles, and Nick Demjan and Hazem Abdelaal at No. 4 doubles could advance to the finals. However, inclement weather postponed the matches once again. The timetable for resuming action was still not known when speaking with coach Austin Berg Monday evening.
The Zephs made more history under Berg when they earned a trip to the District 11 Boys Team Tennis Championship.
Their first round opponent was Parkland who entered the tourney as the No. 1 seed. Whitehall lost 5-0. It was the first time Whitehall made the team district tourney in at least 13 years, a sign of just how far the program has come under Berg.
Berg said that he had to juggle his line-up a bit due to illnesses. The game featured three singles and two doubles matches. He said that Alex Rohn was one of those players battling an illness, but he still managed to put up a good fight in the first set, eventually succumbing 4-6. He dropped the second set 1-6.
“He just couldn’t last,” said Berg. “He gave a great effort.”
District 11 also held its singles tournament last week. Representing Whitehall was Jeremy Lim who drew Sergio Montes from East Stroudsburg North in the first round. Lim won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. He then faced a familiar opponent, Freedom’s Aiden Bodeo-Lomicky. These two have faced one another three times this year. The Patriot won this time 6-2, 6-2. Bodeo-Lomicky made it all the way to the semifinals before being ousted by Matt Fitzmaurice.
“He gave a good showing,” said Berg.
Berg said that Lim can hit the ball back and forth with his fellow No. 1 players, but he still needs to be more consistent. It’s something that will come with experience. He’s also facing seasoned players like Bodeo-Lomicky who have the ability to challenge for a league crown.
Lim gave Berg another first, becoming his first No. 1 singles player to advance into the next round.
“We’re lasting a lot longer in these tournaments,” said Berg. “It’s been fun.”
The Zephs will continue their postseason march with the doubles portion of the D-11 Championships that were set to begin this week. Berg said that he’s bringing two doubles teams to compete in the tourney.
He’s going to pair Gavin Meyers and Jeremy Lim together, along with Nick Rohn and Max Nuscher. Because of the bad weather forecasted this week, he’s not sure of the timetable for these matches, either.
They ended their regular season with a 3-2 win over Pen Argyl. The victory gave them a winning record on the season, finishing at 10-8.
Against the Green Knights, the Zephs won two of three singles matches. No. 1 Jeremy Lim took down Tyler Minnich 6-4, 6-0.
It was another win at No. 1 for Lim, who continues to make strides in that position.
At No. 2, Gavin Meyers was locked in a three-set duel with Sam Martini. After dropping the first set, 4-6, he bounced back to take the second set, 7-6. However, he fell in the decisive third, 6-4.
Berg said that Martini didn’t miss anything, and Meyers ability to stay in the match the entire time underscored how the Green Knight had to earn every point.
Alex Rohn also had a three-setter on his hands. He dropped the first set against Mason Hudnall 2-6, but rebounded to win the next two, 7-5 and 6-1.
It was a day of three-set matches for the Zephyrs. At No. 2 doubles, Max Nuscher and Nick Rohn lost the sandwich set to Russell Hoover Ron Porter and 5-7, but had the bookend wins 6-2, 6-4.
“They were all intense matches,” said Berg.
As they wait to see if Mother Nature will cooperate and allow them to get onto the court, berg reflected on a season that’s brought a lot of firsts.
“It’s been exciting this year, that’s for sure,” said Berg.
