Zephs are winners of six straight
Whitehall’s win streak on the volleyball courts reached six straight matches following Monday’s sweep over Freedom--25-15, 25-18, 25-16--on the road.
The Zephyrs have now swept five out of their last six opponents, with the exception coming in last week’s five game clash with Dieruff, as the Zephs held on to win 21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 22-25, 15-5.
Getting a competitive match under their belt is something that head coach George Cowitch welcomes, as wins over the likes of Hazleton, Freedom, North Pocono and Bethlehem Catholic leave a bit to be desired from testing a team like the Zephyrs (9-3) at this point of the season.
“I think that is true and it will be tough to see improvement, but we are not taking anything for granted,” said Cowitch of the Zephs schedule. “When teams play us, its like their championship game, they want to beat us so bad. Our guys have to learn that and keep pushing after a good first set win.
“The Dieruff match was great for our guys. It’s always a good thing to learn how to win late in a match.”
Winning late may not be a problem for Whitehall over the next two weeks, as they take on Allen (0-9), Northampton (1-7) and Nazareth (5-4) in East Penn Conferee action before closing out the season against Parkland (9-0) on April 12.
Despite the lack of bite the schedule may offer down the stretch, Cowitch is looking for his team to grow.
“We as a team are improving, but we need to be more consistent in the next few matches,” he said. “We as a coaching staff have challenged these guys not to be content with where we are at. While the record is nice, we are looking to do bigger and better things. I think we lack a killer instinct at times when we have a chance to put teams away. If we can develop that over the next few weeks, we will be just fine.”
The Zephyrs will also host Wyoming Valley West this Saturday at 11:30 am. The Spartans are usually a team that makes their way into the District 11 AAA tournament, giving the Zephs an opportunity to get a first hand look at a possible opponent before the postseason.
