Coplay: Sports season to begin

Coplay Sports Inc. officially kicks off its 2016 season on Saturday with a festive flair. Girls and boys, along with their coaches, will take part in a parade that starts on the west end of Sammy Balliet Stadium. The teams proceed to the main diamond of Coplay Sports.

There the teams and coaches are introduced - a ceremony with short remarks by speakers, moms receiving a spray of flowers from the kids and the first pitch thrown by the youngest player and ball caught by the oldest player.

The organization fields in-house teams, and traveling teams that are aligned with leagues, such as Lehigh Valley, Parkland, Central Whitehall and Whitehall-Coplay. There are hardball programs for boys and softball for girls.

Don’t put your old tires out at curbside for borough refuse trucks to pick up on garbage days. The borough has its annual tire drop-off program May 7.

This year, the location has changed. The new site is at the bottom of Bridge Street, off of North Front Street and Coplay-Northampton Bridge. It is property the borough recently purchased from General Supply Company.

There is no fee to drop off used tires. Tires from large trucks, motorcycles, ATVs and bicycles will not be accepted.

Coplay Lions Club reminds the public it has a container with its logo in front of the library for people to donate eyeglasses they no longer use. The club sends them on to Lions district offices for others to utilize.

With St. Peter’s Cemetery and Coplay Cemetery having their grounds spruced up, families who have placed small American flags on their loved ones’ burial plots can take the flags to Coplay American Legion Post 426 on South Second Street for disposal at a red-, white- and blue-painted former mailbox.
