Catasauqua: YMCA will hold day for kids

YMCA Healthy Kids Day will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 30 at the Y in Catasauqua. This is the Y’s largest national initiative event supporting a focus on healthy living.

This year, the Y will communicate a strong national message on the importance of children being safe, active and engaged over the summer months.

At this free event, there will be vision screenings, fitness classes, dancing, a bounce house and more.

Activities will be provided by North Catasauqua and Catasauqua police departments and North Catasauqua Fire Department.

The 22nd annual Russell Miller/Danny Danko memorial golf outing will be held April 30 at Willowbrook Golf Course.

The fee includes golfing with a cart, a continental breakfast, lunch, fruit, beverages and a buffet dinner.

Happy 300th birthday, George! The George Taylor House’s opening day is May 1 in honor of this significant birthday.

The day starts off noon with a parade, including a calliope, antique fire trucks, reenactors, local organizations and more. It will begin at Front and Union streets, wind through Catasauqua and end at the George Taylor House.

Other activities taking place 1-4 p.m. will include horse-drawn carriage rides, demonstrations and crafts by the Y; Ben Franklin demonstrating quill writing and blacksmith work; and guided tours. There also will be a birthday cake and ice cream. The gift shop will be open as well.

Historic Catasauqua Preservation Association (HCPA) announces The Biery House Museum and Art Gallery, 8 Race St., will be open for summer hours 1- 4 p.m. starting May 1.

Also, plan to visit the HCPA Biery’s Port blacksmiths and gift shop at 5 Union St. HCPA will be open 1-4 p.m. May through September the first and third Sundays of the month.

Catasauqua Community Thrift Shop, 113 Bridge St., will reopen May 2 with new clothing for spring and summer.

Donations of good, used, clean clothing are gratefully accepted during store operation hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday.

Proceeds from the thrift shop are returned to the community through contributions that support youth and adult programs and services.

Learn how to take care of your trees when Glenn Myster talks about “Tree Care for the Modern World.”

Myster is a certified arborist and will share tree-caring techniques at the Catasauqua Garden Club meeting 1 p.m. May 4. The meeting will take place at Slovak Center Social Club, 1233 Fifth St., North Catasauqua.

Please have items for judging ready early, so there will be time to discuss the annual plant sale scheduled for May 14.

Catasauqua Shade Tree Commission reminds residents it is unlawful to remove, prune or plant a street tree at curbside without the approval of the commission.

A no-fee permit is required in accordance with the Shade Tree Commission Ordinance. To obtain a permit, call Catasauqua Borough Hall during business hours at 610-264-0571, and a member of the commission will contact you.

Anyone in violation of this ordinance will be cited.

Property owners, trees that have been removed without removing the stump also is in violation of the ordinance as stated on the removal permit.

Failure to remove this stump below the surface of the ground within 30 days of the notice will cause the borough to remove it and bill the property owner. The borough will take action of placing a lien on the property if failure of payment occurs.
