Girls lacrosse gets revenge on Red Rovers

The Emmaus girls lacrosse team fell in heartbreaking fashion in its first meeting with Easton.

Nine days later Hornets got another crack at the Red Rovers. Emmaus came out on the winning end Monday afternoon with a 14-9 victory at Easton High School. The win clinched a District 11 berth for the Hornets (9-4 overall, 7-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference).

“We came out today and wanted to win this one badly,” said Emmaus head coach Nancy DeBellis. “They had beaten us last week, and we needed this one for districts. I’m proud of the girls for taking care of business today.”

Sophomore Paige Weaver scored a career-high five goals, while senior Destanee Watkins and sophomore Lizzie Ninesling both recorded hat tricks for the team’s fourth straight win and sixth in the last seven games since the 11-9 loss to Easton.

Emmaus played like a team that was desperate for a win, scoring nine goals in the first half and taking a 9-5 advantage into halftime.

“We played the way I know that we can play,” said DeBellis. “Offensively we were able to have different players score, and defensively we were strong.”

Junior Kendelle Conrad tallied a pair of goals and an assist, while freshman Taylor O’Brien added a goal and an assist. Junior Holly Brinckman had a game-high two assists. Junior goalie Cristina Carotenuto picked up her ninth win making five saves.

Along with undefeated Parkland, Easton (8-3, 7-2) is vying for one of the top seeds in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs. The win puts the Hornets in a good position moving forward.

“We knew that Easton was a great team coming in,” said DeBellis. “We had to come out and play an overall good game on both sides, and we did that. I’m proud of the girls.”

Emmaus finishes the week with a home game (senior night) on Tuesday against Upper Perkiomen, and a trip to Southern Lehigh on Friday night.
