LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

EHS hands Zephs first league loss

In the span of three days, Emmaus baseball went from a definite high to a definite low. The short roller coaster ride started with an 8-5 win over previously undefeated Whitehall and finished with losses to Blue Mountain and Scranton Prep on Saturday.

Against Whitehall, it was Todd Moxey who led the Hornets, giving them six strong innings on the mound and two hits at the plate. The junior allowed just one run over his six inning stint before giving way to Logan Foley, who threw the seventh inning of the game played at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown.

“We were really pumped up and we knew they were undefeated in the conference,” said Moxey. “We came out hitting in the first inning and that was big for us. It was great to pitch [at Coca-Cola Park] and get the win here. It was a great game for us.”

After Moxey helped get Emmaus out to a 2-0 lead in the first, Whitehall tied the game in the second, but the Hornets again went to work in the third, scoring three times. Emmaus was able to build its lead to 8-3 going to the top of the seventh, but the Zephyrs weren’t done,. They put up two more runs before Emmaus could end the uprising and take the 8-5 win.

Coming off the high of that win, losses in back-to-back games Saturday were especially tough to handle. Emmaus (6-6, 5-4) battled from a 2-0 deficit to take a 4-2 lead against Blue Mountain, but couldn’t come up with a shutdown inning. The Eagles equaled Emmaus’ three-run bottom of the third with a three-run top of the fourth and then scored three more runs over the next two innings. Emmaus continued to battle, but came up short, losing 8-7.

Against Scranton Prep, Emmaus jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held a 7-6 lead going to the top of the seventh, but the Cavaliers scored four times in the top of the seventh and beat the Hornets 10-7.

“It’s disappointing to have played the way we did against Whitehall and then lose those two games over the weekend,” said head coach Mike Mihalik. “We should have won both games and we would have, but we made a lot of mistakes again and that was the difference.”

Emmaus made four errors in each of their losses Saturday and three in the win over Whitehall. The Hornets have made 36 errors on the season and have had just one game where they didn’t commit an error.

“We’re our own worst enemy and we aren’t getting any better,” said Mihalik. “We just keep hurting ourselves, not only with errors, but just making bad decisions.”

The Hornets have one nonconference game left on the schedule when they host Souderton Friday. The rest of the schedule is against division foes, which means there is still a lot to be determined for the postseason.

Emmaus hosts Nazareth (7-5, 7-3) Thursday before two games with Northampton (7-6, 5-6) next week and another meeting with Parkland (8-4, 8-2).
