Barakat receives Askew volunteer award

Michelle Barakat of Bethlehem recently received the Lynn H. Askew Student Volunteer of the Year award and special recognition for 2016 seniors at Susquehanna University.

The earth and environmental sciences major was honored during the March 16 Celebrating Helpful Experiences through Engaging Relationships in Service special awards program and reception.

The program recognizes individuals and student groups who complete a significant amount of community service.

Local mayors support PowerTalk Day

Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski and Fountain Hill Mayor Jose Rosado were among 30 state mayors to issue proclamations in support of April 21 PowerTalk Day, a day for parents to have a serious conversation with their children about underage drinking.

The initiative is sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Nationwide Insurance and the GM Foundation are supporting partners.

Parents can download a free Power of Parents handbook for parents of middle school or high school students, or register for a free 15-minute online workshop at madd.org/powertalk21.

Henry receives Chambliss Award

Mary Kathleen Henry ‘16, of Bethlehem, is the recipient of Kutztown University’s Silver Chambliss student academic achievement award-original artwork of high quality category.

The bachelor’s degree in communication design candidate has won awards previously in the Flux Student Design Competition (theater poster); and the Society of Publication Design (Mitch Shostak and the Spotlight Online Gallery Show awards.

The award was established through a donation provided by Dr. Carlson R. Chambliss, KU faculty member from 1970-2003. Faculty members nominate graduating seniors in recognition of exceptional individual achievements.

Celebration of Literacy awards

Several people will be honored as literacy award winners of 2016 on May 4 at the Canova Commons, Thompkins College Center, Cedar Crest College.

The recipients are Julie Borden, Joan Lengel, Dr. Jill Price and Dr. Ruth Tice, winners of the Colonial Association of Reading Educators 2016 Celebrate Literacy award; and Kelly Stoops, Betsy Dickey, Sue Guiney, Maria Teresa Bautista, John Farrell and Dawn Bush, winners of the Judith’s Reading Room 2016 Freedom Through Literacy award.

PAGP selects Zwikl

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia has recognized Kurt Zwikl, of Bethlehem, as the recipient of the PAGP’s highest honor, the James Biddle Lifetime Achievement Award. The Bethlehem resident and former legislator spearheaded efforts to save hundreds of historic structures along the banks of the Schuylkill.

The June 8 award ceremony will also honor Global Philadelphia, Louis Kahn’s Esherick House, Manayunk Bridge Trail and the Philadelphia City Hall Gates projects. For information, visit www.preservationalliance.com.

Honor societies news

Caroline Febbo, of Bethlehem, was inducted into the Tau Chapter of Chi Sigma Alpha Student Affairs Honor Society International on April 5 at Kutztown University. Chi Sigma Alpha Student Affairs Honor Society International is comprised of graduate students, alumni, faculty and student affairs professionals.

Robert Leiss, of Bethlehem, was inducted into the Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Society at Kutztown University. Gamma Sigma Alpha is a national honor society for students who are members of a social Greek organization and have at least a 3.5 GPA in their junior or senior year.

Kutztown University Department of Criminal Justice inducted David Derkits and Leo Rooney, both of Bethlehem, into the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society, the national criminal justice honor society.

Devon Knipe, of Bethlehem, was recently inducted into SALUTE National Honor Society for Veterans at Kutztown University. This was the first class of students at KU to be inducted into the Service - Academics - Leadership - Unity - Tribute - Excellence honors program.

The Worcester Academy Upper School has named Yueming Li, grade 10, of Bethlehem, on the first semester honor roll and headmaster’s list for the 2015-2016 school year for academic excellence, challenge, and personal growth.

Bin Wang,of Bethlehem, recently won a third-place award for Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Phi Beta Lambda Chapter. The chapter earned second place as the Gold Seal Chapter Award of Merit from the Phi Beta Lambda state competition in Harrisburg.

Alvernia University

Two Bethlehem residents studying at Alvernia University received awards at the annual Honors Convocation on April 17.

James Bertolotti earned the excellence in sport management award from the business department, college of professional programs. Victoria Vidumsky earned a master of science in occupational therapy academic excellence award from the occupational therapy department, college of professional programs.

King’s College

Three area residents and King’s College students were recently inducted into the college’s chapters of various honor societies.

Alexandra Evangelista, of Hellertown, was inducted into Delta Epsilon Sigma, the Institute of Management Accountants accounting honor society; Beta Gamma Sigma, the business national honor society; the Omicron Delta Epsilon economics honor society; and The Aquinas Society, the college’s honor society. She is a junior accounting and finance double major.

Katherine Fitch, of Bethlehem, was inducted into the Institute of Management Accountants accounting honor society. She is a junior accounting major with minors in finance, marketing, and international business.

Sean Krutsick, of Bethlehem, was inducted into Delta Epsilon Sigma honor society, the national honor society of colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition. The senior mass communications major is a member of Psi Epsilon chapter, Lambda Pi Eta mass communications honors society.
