Record- setter!

It took 31 years to accomplish the feat, but Ivanna Jones made sure she etched her name in the Whitehall track and field record book when they met Freedom and Pocono Mountain West last week.

Jones took possession of the triple jump record, a mark that has stood since 1985 when Marci Berner set the record with a 36-0 leap. Jones sailed 36-0.50 to set the new mark, giving her two school records during her illustrious career. She set the long jump record last year with a 17-81/4 mark.

Jones was first in all three jumps, winning the high jump at 5-1 and the long jump with a 17-01 leap. She was also part of the winning 4x100 really team which also featured Kylee Cunningham, Amanda Crooks and Taylor George. That foursome won the race in 50.5.

Head coach James Sebesta said that Jones is a tireless worker who constantly wants to improve.

“She’s just a great athlete,” said Sebesta. “She works hard, too. She just continues to impress.”

Both the boys and the girls swept the meet, with the boys winning 90-60 against PMW and 85-65 versus Freedom. The girls were victorious against Freedom 129-21, and bested PMW, 113-37. The girls record now sits at 5-2. The boys are 4-3.

Sebesta said that both teams were solid in every event, leading to the sweep.

“We got a little bit of everything from everybody,” said Sebesta.

Crooks was another multiple winner. In addition to the 4x100 relay, she was first in the 100 (12.2) and first in the 200 (25.9).

The girls swept the 800 as Kassidy Cunningham nailed down the top spot (2:30.5), Autumn Dragovits was second (2:33.2) and Alexandra Dorner was third at 2:40.2.

In the 1600, Hannah Gill took second (5:52.8), while Rachel Herr was third (5:56.7). The 3200 saw the same two capture second and third again, but in the two mile they flip-flopped positions.

Jill Kreglow won the high hurdles in 17.7, while Madelyn Mertz was first in the 300 hurdles at 51.5.

Sebesta said that Kreglow had a good meet against Freedom and PMW. In fact, he said that perhaps 15 or 16 kids established personal bests.

“They really went out and competed,” he said.

The girls also swept the pole vault as Kali Bartynski took first (7-6), Amber Myers was second (7-0) and Savanah Rivera was third at 7-0.

Vanessa Hadeed was another multiple winner for the Zephs, taking first in the shot with a 33-04.25 mark, and tops in the discus with a 95-03.50 mark.

The girls also swept the javelin as Logan Miller (114-06), Haley Arner (96-10), and Victoria Marks (90-03), were first, second and third, respectively.

The boys featured some multiple winners as well. Calvin Schneck was tops in the 800 at 2:00.3, and was also part of the winning 4x400 team along with Andrew Hawk, Kovalchick and Jahrod Amoroso. Schneck and Hawk were also victorious in the 4x800 as well.

Amoroso also took multiple honors, winning the 110 meters along with the 4x400, while Elliot Miller was tops in the pole vault at 12-6, while also taking first in the 4x800 relay along with Caleb Staub, Hawk and Schneck.

Brandon Jones won the 200 meters in 23.1, while Nick Kovalchick was second in the 400 at 54.8.

Charles Hudson soared above the competition in the high jump, winning with a 6-1 mark, while Tyler Meyers was tops in the discus with a 147-05 toss.

Jackson Buskirk was high man in the javelin with a 162-02 mark, while Jacob Snyder finished third in both the javelin (135-01) and the discus (111-110, while Phil Reeves finished third in the shot at 40-02.50.
