WHS baseball team also battling the weather
It wasn’t supposed to be that kind of frosty cold drink awaiting teams at Coca-Cola Park last Saturday.
However, the Whitehall baseball team and their league counterparts couldn’t escape some April snow that intruded on their plans to play at the IronPigs facility over the weekend.
They were supposed to play Emmaus at the annual Play Day that features games between Eastern Pennsylvania Conference teams. Instead, that game will now serve as a home game for Whitehall to be played on May 9. Furthermore, the game scheduled for April 22 against Emmaus has been moved to Coca-Cola Park where they’ll be the visitors for a game under the lights at 8 p.m.
The Zephyrs haven’t been able to get on the field since April 6 against Central Catholic. The spate of bad weather has forced a number of cancellations, including Tuesday’s game against Northampton.
That was pushed back to Wednesday, leaving the Zephs with two more games this week, a Thursday tilt against Pocono Mountain East at their field, and at Allen on Saturday.
That means Whitehall has just played three league games to this point. Other teams in the EPC haven’t had their schedules impacted quite as severely as the Zephs, who will look to make up some of that ground this week.
Their last game was an 11-5 win against ACC. That game featured another shot in the arm from their bullpen, helping them battle back from a deficit just like their game against Liberty earlier this season.
Manager Shaun O’Boyle said Matt Dobeck came in relief and shut down the Vikings for three innings, posting a string of goose eggs to give the Zephs their third league win of the season.
The Zephs managed to trim ACC’s lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, setting the stage for Dobeck’s impact on the game, both on the mound and at the plate.
He not only silenced the Vikings bats, but he barreled a few balls of his own, finishing the game 3-for-5 with two triples and four RBIs. He also recorded six Ks in those three innings of work.
“Dobeck really had a nice game,” said O’Boyle.
O’Boyle said that Dobeck had been chomping at the bit to get into a game. When he got his chance, he delivered with those scoreless innings.
“He got his chance and shot them down for the win,” said O’Boyle.
O’Boyle said that his relievers have now combined for six scoreless innings over their last two games. Matt Hamscher also notched three scoreless innings against Liberty, helping the Zephs to that 10-7 win.
“The relief pitching, they’re coming in and doing the job for us at the end of the game,” said O’Boyle.
Starting pitcher Zach Gilbert pitched well enough to keep the Zephs in the game, and that’s what O’Boyle needs from his starting staff. He believes that if he can get quality starts from his starters, their relievers will help shut the door.
“We just want them [the starters] to keep it close,” said O’Boyle.
The Zephs pounded out 11 hits against the Vikings. Along with Dobeck’s day, Austin Dreisbach had two doubles and two RBIs. Gianni Sinatore also had two RBIs, while Alex Bruneio, Hamscher and Jarrod Miller each knocked in a run.
Dreisbach has emerged as one of their leading hitters this season. O’Boyle said that he’s been working with coach Chris Raber, refining and fine tuning some things. He said they’ve made some changes and that Dreisbach has incorporated those changes into his at-bats.
In fact, O’Boyle said that hold true for everyone on the team. They’ve all been working on their mechanics, trying to get an edge.
O’Boyle believes if they can continue to hit, they’ll be a force in the league throughout the year. His only qualm so far is that it’s taking a couple of innings for their bats to get warm, prompting some to dub them the “Cardiac Kids.”
“Everybody’s working hard, and working on the things we need to do,” he said.
