LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Volleyball looking to bounce back

Whitehall was off to an undefeated start to the volleyball season, but that was until last week when the Zephyrs ran into defending state champion Parkland and East Penn Conference up-comer Liberty.

After a 3-0 start to the year, Whitehall fell victim to the Trojans power, getting swept in three games, followed by a sweep to Liberty two days later.

Head coach George Cowitch saw his group take sweeps in their first two matches against Quakertown and Northampton, before being pushed to five games against Nazareth in their third match of the season. Last week’s results have obviously changed the momentum of the Zephyrs early start.

“I like the fact that there is no let up when we are on the court,” Cowitch said. “We played great the first two matches and now haven’t been playing our best, but we are finding ways to win.

With last week’s battles featuring two of the East Penn Conference’s toughest tests, Cowitch knows this week can help put his team back on track.

The Zephyrs (4-2) took down Easton in three games Tuesday night - 25-8, 25-14, 25-9 - but face another tough challenge against Emmaus (5-0) on Thursday night.

They close out a jam packed week of four matches against Hazleton on Friday, followed by Saturday morning’s bout with North Pocono at Freedom High School.

However, the lessons learned from last week’s losses can go a long way to determining the future of this season.

“Parkland is a team that is on their own planet right now,” Cowitch said. “I can’t really judge ourselves against them. As for Liberty, that’s a team that we can judge ourselves against and see where we are as a team early. We are about peaking at the right time, and obviously now is not that time.

“We need to start faster as a team. We haven’t been doing that recently and also need to limit mistakes. That’s something we have been working on the past two weeks.”
