Upper Mac board names police chaplains

During their March meeting, Upper Macungie supervisors appointed two chaplains, Pastor Allen Kline and Rev. Dr. H. Richard McClain, to serve the Upper Macungie Township Police Department.

They will supply spiritual support and grief counseling as needed.

In other matters, the board discussed an agreement for the Lehigh County Authority to take over the portion of the sewer system in Lowhill Township.

Chris Noll and Steve Gitsch were appointed as alternate sewage enforcement officers for the township.

Eric Ely is primary SEO.

A request for fire police assistance from outside sources was mentioned for the July 2 celebration in Trexlertown.

A need for 30 fire police, including members from Lynn, North Whitehall and Lower Macungie townships, and the City of Allentown is anticipated.

Supervisors approved the request.

A feasibility study will be done by Keystone Engineering to ascertain the need for a community center in the township.

Police Chief Edgardo Colon asked the board to attempt to lease a portion of Dart Drive for use as a truck inspection area.

Dart Drive is privately owned by Nestle Waters and Boston Beer.

This area would be used to check trucks for any violations under the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program.

Scott Faust and Keystone Engineering will get together to draft the bid specification for advertisement.

All proposed road projects for 2016 will be reviewed to determine the amount of materials needed.

Faust also mentioned there are several pieces of equipment that should be offered for sale.

Three mowers, a 2002 Mack dump truck, a 2008 Ford F350 utility vehicle and a trailer will be offered for sale

Other items will be offered for sale as they are replaced or not needed.

Advertisement will be by sealed bid only.

Bids for mowing the grass around the township complex and in the detention ponds were advertised.

Andrea Russell, recreation committee member, told supervisors a New Year’s Eve party will be offered for kids.

The two-hour party will start noon on New Year’s Eve day. Other similar parties were well attended.

Non-residents will be allowed to use Independent Park for certain functions with payment of an additional $50 to the cost.

J. Scott Stenroos noted that there were four plans submitted to the planning commission.

Colon told the board the police department is giving tests to select two new police officers.

Applicants will be graded after completion of all the tests.

Total calls for service for February were 696 with 291 traffic citations and 112 false alarms.

The No. 1 reported crime was fraud with 13 instances. Second was DUI with five followed by four assaults.

K-9 activities included one tracking and one area search.

Total motor carrier inspections were eleven with 21 violations discovered resulting in seven citations issued.

Fire Marshal Grant Grim’s report showed a total of 124 emergency responses of which Station 8 responded to 33.

Station 25 volunteers answered 44 calls and Station 56 responded to 47 calls. No new fire company members were initiated.

Scott Faust’s public works report showed much of the same as in previous months. Equipment is being cleaned to remove excess salt accumulated in fighting the recent snow storm.

Daren Martocci said 19 commercial permits were issued.

In addition, 44 residential and nine zoning permits were issued.

Two plumbing licenses were issued as were seven electric licenses.

The zoning hearing board listened to the appeal of Palmira Difiore, South Trexlertown Road, for a variance on sign regulations in the Neighborhood Commercial District. The appeal was granted.

Another appeal was heard concerning a request for a variance on the minimum lot size regulations for property along Ruppsville Road in the Light Industrial District.

The board voted to grant the applicant a continuance until April 27.

The recreation report featured the following events: Tennis will run May 2 to June 6. Summer programs include disc golf opening day on May 14 with yoga in the park June 5-July 17.
