Coplay: Borough board positions are available

Want to serve the borough in some appointive fashion but not an elective office? The borough has several vacancies on boards: planning commission; two seats on the zoning board of adjustment; park and recreation board; and three seats on the board of appeals. Members need an engineering or construction background.

Interested persons can stop by the borough hall for additional information or call 610-262-6088.

Spring has arrived, and its signs are throughout the borough. Residents are mowing their lawns now, and red-breasted robins have begun making their appearances.

Public works are picking up grass clippings, yard waste and bundled tree limbs each Friday through October, another sign that warmer weather allows for yard cleanup.

Street sweeping is conducted each spring - this year May 11 and 12 - and with the less harsh winter we’ve had, it may be a bit easier this time around. Borough public works crews did not have to put as much anti-skid materials on streets.

Residents are reminded to heed the no parking signs; otherwise, vehicles parked on the street will be ticketed by police.

One Coplay column reader recently asked if anyone remembers the rite of passage youngsters engaged in Easter Monday when schools were closed for the holiday. It was bragging rights to return to the classroom and boast of being the first to plunge into the Lehigh River, not as a polar bear club enthusiast, but just to say summertime school vacation was around the bend.
