Whitehall softball off to hot start
Even though the Whitehall softball team is off to a great start, head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend cautioned that anyone pinning lofty expectations upon them so soon may want to pump the brakes a little.
They’ve jumped out to a 3-0 start, yielding just three runs in those games while scoring 15. They’ve beaten Bethlehem Catholic, the reigning 3A state champions, walloped a good Liberty team, and recorded a no-hitter in their opening game against Ohio’s Bloom-Carroll.
But Berg-Townsend knows you don’t win anything in March.
“Early wins build confidence, but great teams win late in the season,” said Berg-Townsend. “We can’t let it stop.”
She said that they just want to keep advancing, making sure they keep their foot on the throttle. Berg-Towsend said that you don’t want to be hot early and then gassed at the end.
That’s where the coaching staff comes in. They serve as a daily reminder to keep pushing forward, keep advancing. That way they’ll be physically and mentally prepared for the road ahead, she said.
They got their league schedule underway against Bethlehem Catholic last week. Once again Kay Solderitch was nearly untouchable, allowing just two hits and two runs.
Berg-Townsed said that they were able to solve Golden Hawk hurler Elyse Cuttic the second time through the lineup. They erupted for four runs in the top of the third, and that was all Kay Solderitch would need for the complete game victory.
Jill Rex led off that inning with a bunt single, and that was followed by hits from Mackenzie Guzy and Julia Solderitch, who delivered a two-run knock in the frame. Kay Solderitch also helped herself with an RBI in the inning.
“The girls came out with aggressive swings [in that inning],” said Berg-Townsend. “We got some timely hits when we needed them.”
Heading into last Thursday’s game, Kay Solderitch had allowed just two hits through 14 innings of work. In her start against Liberty, she scattered 10 hits but delivered another shutout for her third win of the season. The southpaw struck out eight ’Canes and also got her cuts in at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
Kay Solderitch was able to work out of jams throughout the game. Berg-Townsend said that it’s a sign of her experience. The ’Canes had baserunners in every inning.
“The key in those situations is her maturity,” said Berg-Townsend. “She trusted herself, she trusted her defense. It’s all those things that will make her great in the circle.”
Berg-Townsend said that they were up against another good pitcher in Victoria Schmidt. She said that once again they were aggressive, scoring runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.
Kay Solderitch didn’t waste any time helping herself at the plate, initiating a two-run rally with a single. Julia Solderitch then delivered a single as did Rachel Spanitz to give the Zephs the 2-0 lead.
Kay Solderitch was once again the instigator in the three-run third. She laced a double which was followed by hits from Guzy, Julia Solderitch and Ashlee Brosky.
Berg-Townsend believes that confidence is playing a big role in their success at the plate. That coupled with their aggressiveness has led to those 15 runs through the first three game.
“It’s coming through right from the get go,” she said. “The girls are being aggressive.”
