New tax collector sought for North Whitehall Twp

North Whitehall Township Manager Jeff Bartlett reports supervisors are in the process of appointing a tax collector to occupy that position through Dec. 31, 2017.

After serving as tax collector for 34 years, Susan Gelinas resigned in January with two years remaining on her elected term.

Supervisors then selected Denise Stanek as township tax collector. She submitted a letter of resignation recently.

Bartlett commented on the matter.

“Supervisors will accept her resignation at the April 4 meeting,” Bartlett said. “I’m hoping they will be able to appoint a new tax collector April 4.

“They have several options right now in discussions with several people.”

He said the only requirements for being a tax collector are the person must be at least 18 years old and a North Whitehall resident for at least one year prior to running in the election.

“There are some state certifications but they don’t need a college degree or prior experience,” Bartlett said. “But a background in math or accounting would be helpful.”

In 2017, candidates for tax collector enter the spring primary and the November general election.

The winning candidate will take office in January 2018.

At the March 22 meeting, Parkland School Board authorized Director of Business Administration John Vignone and Assistant Director Frank Pearn Jr. to have access to the district real estate tax accounts established by North Whitehall Township at The Neffs National Bank.

The business managers will be able to view account information but not deposit or withdraw funds.

“We have a lot of money in those accounts,” Vignone said.

The action allows Parkland administrators to have some oversight on school property tax revenues collected by North Whitehall.
