LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Company offers everything from lawn care to Christmas Decor

Winter, spring, summer, fall; whichever season is a favorite, each has its own delight.

For the folks at Pennsylvania Lawn and Landscape, the change of the seasons also brings about a change in gears.

From Christmas lights and snow removal to the approaching planting and lawn care season, this team of experts offers it all.

The company, based in Orefield, is owned by Ken Divers, and it is truly a family-run operation.

Divers’ crew includes himself, his managers, 10 other full-time employees, and about 30 seasonal workers, all of whom he considers part of his family.

As spring and summer approach, the team is busy gearing up for sunshine, grass and flowers, but it wasn’t long ago the plows were running and the salt was flowing.

Whatever the weather, the offices of Pennsylavania Lawn and Landscape are an entertaining escape from the elements.

A kid at heart, Divers’ office is filled with a Star Wars collection and other toys and memorabilia, a welcome relief, he says, from stress, particularly remembering the recent Blizzard of 2016.

“We were out there for 36 hours straight, with a four-hour break, and then back out for 16 hours,” said Divers.

“I can take a 4- to 6-inch storm any day, but I never want to live through another storm like that.”

Despite the record-breaking snowfall, it’s the child in Divers who is already looking forward to next winter, particularly that twinkling time of year; the holiday season.

About 20 years ago, he teamed up with as a franchise of Christmas Décor and began offering Christmas lights set up and removal, something near and dear to him personally.

Divers said he has always loved “hanging up the lights” at his own home.

“Like the Griswolds (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation) I went nuts,” he said. “I love Christmas so much.

“Now, that love has blossomed into something wonderful; and it is a huge team effort.”

Prior to the lighting business, it was necessary to lay off most of his employees at the end of the lawn care season.

“We really needed to find something to keep them employed during the winter months,” noted Divers, stressing how important his team members are to him and to the success of the company. “We really are a family.

“I couldn’t stand the thought of having to lay these guys off every year especially just before the holidays.”

With the addition of Christmas Décor, which offers a variety of holiday lighting plans to residential and commercial customers, Divers has been able to maintain his 10 full-time, year-round employees.

Christmas Décor has become an educator itself.

The company offers classes to help other franchisees from across the country.

In addition to the basics of planning and setup, franchisees learn how to maintain, store, provide service and guarantee safety.

When it comes to residential light displays, Divers’ team prides itself on taking care of everything.

They help the homeowner create a plan, then get to work on installation.

“All the homeowner has to do is sit back and enjoy,” said Divers.

For the past two years, Christmas Décor has been delighting residents of the Lehigh Valley with an interactive walk-through light extravaganza at the Lehigh Valley Zoo.

“We just started talking about it and ever since then, it has been a great partnership,” Divers said. “We have an incredible team that really does their best to make sure everyone has a great family experience.”

“Winter Wonderland at the Zoo” uses half to 1 million energy-saving LED lights.

According to Divers, it takes 10 to 12 weeks to install everything and four weeks to take it all down.

This year, there were two different tunnels with crystals mimicking falling snowflakes.

Displays, such as the safari, were set to music with animals that appeared to move and interact.

The otter camp was transformed into a 360 degree sight and sounds experience featuring scenes from “Frozen” and Divers’ favorite, “Star Wars.”

Divers and his wife, Stacey, have three children: McKenzi, Dalton and Miley.

He speaks proudly of his family.

“Stacey works as an LPN at ABC Pediatrics. She keeps it all together,” he said.

“McKenzi is a senior at Northwestern Lehigh High School and will attend Lock Haven University in the fall.”

“She’s an excellent student and athlete,” said Divers. “It’s hard to imagine her heading off to college.”

Dalton, 16, attends half-day at Northwestern and half-day at Lehigh Carbon Technical Institute studying heavy equipment operation.

“He’s one of my best operators, but he’s had an advantage since he has been doing this since a toddler,” Divers said.

Miley, 7, is “a sweet little girl who really looks up to her older siblings,” he said.

Amidst school and sports, Ken and Stacey stress to their kids the importance of being young.

“Enjoy life while you can,” he said. “Adult responsibilities come quick.”

Especially important to the Divers’ family is giving back to the community.

The family business supports several charities including Ronald McDonald House in Danville.

Christmas Décor’s “Decorated Family Program; Serving Those Who Serve Us” is another example of the family’s dedication.

“The holidays are one of the toughest times for military families, whether their soldier is deployed, wounded, or just becoming re-acclimated to civilian life, we want to help make the holidays special,” said Divers.
