LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Tennis off to hot start

It’s been a whale of a start for the Whitehall boys tennis team as they eclipsed last year’s win total right out of the chute.

The boys started 4-0 as of last week, with wins over East Stroudsburg South, Pleasant Valley, Pocono Mountain West and Dieruff High Schools.

For head coach Austin Berg, it’s trending the way he envisioned when he took over the program. The players are responding to the challenge and it shows in the results.

“It’s really looking up,” said Berg. “It’s really exciting.”

When they held their annual media night recently, he said he was able to say for the first time that they were undefeated.

It began with a 6-1 win over East Stroudsburg South.

In No. 1 singles, East Stroudsburg South’s Cory Cox beat Jeremy Lim 6-2, 6-3. It was the only loss all day for the Zephs who didn’t lose another set in singles competition.

Gavin Meyers blanked Jacob Mithani 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while No. 3 singles, Alex Rohn defeated Seamus Dary-Fitzpatrick 6-0, 6-0.

The Zephs were equally as dominant in the doubles matches.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of Clement Mei and Erik Poon defeated David Philopos and Fernando Puente 8-0 in a pro set.

At No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Max Nuscher and Dan Herrera whitewashed Kevin Orvis and Cooper Libby 6-0.

The No. 3 doubles team of Nick Rohn and Jordan Saliby dropped the ESS tandem of Gabe Owusu and Tyler Aponte 6-1, while No. 4 doubles saw the pairing of Hazem Abdelaal and Nick Demjam defeat Chris Winslett and Aryan Alemick 6-1.

In their other matches, the Zephs defeated Pleasant Valley, 6-1, Dieruff 7-0 and Pocono Mountain West, 6-1.

Berg said that their March 16 match against the Panthers was suspended due to inclement weather, and then picked up this week where the boys only dropped the one match. Berg said that they pick up right where they let off in those situations, and since he was without one of his players who was in the original lineup, it may have ended 7-0. Still, they’ve only dropped three matches in four games.

Leading this cast of upstarts is No. 1 player Lim. He is currently 3-1, losing just the one match to a ESS’s Cox who qualified for districts last season, said Berg. He was able to get five sets from him in his first varsity match at No. 1.

Berg said that he’s never had a No. 1 player who’s been 3-1. Berg predicts a lot of success for Lim and thinks he’s just scratching the surface of what he can accomplish.

Meyers is another player reaping the rewards of hard work. He is 4-0 and has settled into the No. 2 singles spot nicely.

Alex Rohn is 3-1 at No. 3, his only loss was a three-setter against Pleasant Valley. Berg said that Rohn fought back from 5-2 in the second set to come back and win the set, but then lost the eventual match in the third set.

“He really battled in that second set, and then the final set was back and forth, a really fun set to watch,” he said,

Berg said that the doubles teams are also digging in and getting to balls, allowing them to win matches. Nastier is 4-0 in doubles so far, and that’s with multiple partners, proving that their depth this season has allowed them to plug in players and still get successful results.
