Solderitch tosses a no-hitter in Carolina

The excursion to the land of the Palmettos turned out quite fruitful for the Whitehall softball team.

Once they arrived at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, they got in some work at the complex inside the Cal Ripken Experience. When Saturday rolled around, they took the field against Bloom-Carroll High School from Ohio who lost in the Division III state finals last season.

It may have been a tall order defeating a state contender, but it was Zephyr pitcher Kay Solderitch who stood tall, tossing a no-hitter en route to the 4-0 win over the Bulldogs. The southpaw also struck out 15 in her no-no.

The Zephs backed up that stellar performance with some timely hitting. Rachel Spanitz was 3-4 with two RBIs, while Julia Solderitch went 2-4, including and RBI, and Veronica Rodriguez was another Zeph with a multiple hit game, finishing 2-3 with a double.

Head Coach Alexis Berg-Townsend was pleased with their overall team play.

“The team came together and played well. It was exciting and fun to watch them play,” said Berg-Townsend. “The girls came up to the plate with confidence and it showed with their swings.”

The Zephs have been steadily working on mental toughness in preparation for the upcoming season, and this game was something extremely positive to build off as they open league play this week.

“Getting the win under our belt was huge, not only to set the tone for the season but also a confidence builder,” said Berg-Townsend.

The trip also serves as a bonding experience as witnessed by their cookout posted on the Zephyr Athletics Twitter feed.

The Zephs open up Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play this Wednesday against Bethlehem Catholic. On Friday the host Liberty High School, two non-divisional games to start the new year.
