Joseph F. Burghardt, Bethlehem assistant fire chief

Joseph F. Burghardt, 76, of Bethlehem, died March 14, 2016, at Gracedale Nursing Home, Northampton County. Born in New York, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Kovacs) Burghardt.

He joined the Bethlehem Fire Department in 1964 and became the assistant fire chief in 1991, and worked there for 37 years.

He helped organize the annual harvest ball to raise public awareness of burn prevention and to raise funds for the Burn Foundation.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph N. of Pittsburgh and Allan S. of Bethlehem; and his and two grandchildren, Cole and Cassidy.
