LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Article By: The Press

As spring approaches, so does the musical season. The talented bunch of Crusaders involved in the spring theater production prepare for another musical.

This year the Notre Dame Theatre Company will perform the musical “She Loves Me” April 21, 22 and 23. The show promises to captivate the audience with exceptional student talent.

As the head of the fine arts department, Rody Gilkeson has directed a fall play and spring musical for the past 17 years. In addition, Gilkeson organizes summer productions.

“Because over the past couple of years we’ve done some darker pieces of theater, this one is light-hearted,” Gilkeson said. “ ‘She Loves Me’ is about love and it’s a beautiful piece of theater.

Set at a Hungarian parfumerie in the 1930s, “She Loves Me” portrays the troubles of two employees as they unknowingly write love letters to one another.

The theater company holds an annual Cabaret night to raise money for the spring musical. This year’s Cabaret, titled “Once Was Not Enough … Songs from Musical Revivals,” brought students and families together for impressive tunes and talent.

Cabaret featured small ensembles and soloists who picked songs from past Broadway musicals. The vocalists performed in a relaxed environment, surrounded by family, friends and light refreshments.

“‘She Loves Me’ is a light-hearted comedy chock full of literary references and witty sayings. For me, this production is an end to an era of high school theatre that I am quite proud of,” said senior Alex Gosciniak, the lead dancer and bus boy in this production.

Theater at Notre Dame is more than just an extracurricular activity. The “theater kids” live theater year round, bonding over the many hours of hard work and preparation for the many musicals and plays.

Senior ensemble member Christina Smith said, “The Notre Dame Theatre Company has not only given me lifelong friends, but also an incredible appreciation for the work that goes on behind the scenes.”

In the past years Notre Dame received several Freddy award nominations and won the Freddy for Best Overall Small School twice. The theater company hopes to see more nominations for this year’s production of “She Loves Me.”

“‘She Loves Me’ is a fun show, both to perform and watch,” said senior Kathleen Capella, playing Amalia Balash. “It’s great when everyone comes together for one common goal, to put on a memorable show.”

The thespians continue to practice for the spring musical, hoping to make it an unforgettable show.
