John J. Ficek Jr.

John J. Ficek Jr., 90, of Allentown, died peacefully March 10, 2016, in Lehigh Commons, Macungie, where he was a guest for the past four years.

He and his wife Eleanor E. (Mackin) Ficek were married 57 years at the time of her death in 2009.

Born on a train traveling from the Lehigh Valley to McAdoo, he was a son of the late John J. And Catherine (Cook) Ficek Sr.

A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Salisbury Township, he was a member of Calvary Council 528 Knights of Columbus, Allentown.

Early in his career, he was a court stenographer for Ace Reporting Co., Washington, D.C., at the Pentagon and for the War Department.

He returned home to the Lehigh Valley to become a court stenographer in the Lehigh County Court System, working in the chambers of many prominent judges.

He retired in 1984 after nearly 40 years of dedicated service.

A huge Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, he was a mainstay at the former Walp’s Restaurant, Allentown.

His survivors include a son Robert Christopher and his wife Sheila (Barber) of Kutztown; sister Catherine Pavuk of Harrisburg; brother William Ficek and his wife, Elaine, of Parkville, Md.; along with a host of special nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was predeceased by son Brian J. on May 17, 2007, along with brothers Joseph as an infant, and Thomas.

His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on March 17, in St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1040 Flexer Ave., Allentown, PA 18103, with the Rev. Msgr. John P. Murphy as the celebrant.

His viewing will begin 10 a.m. in the church foyer.

Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Upper Macungie Township.

Contributions may be made to the church memorial fund.

Arrangements were made by Gilbert Funeral Home, Whitehall.
