Two area men charged in Upper Mac road rage incident

Upper Macungie Township police say two men were charged in connection with a road rage incident at 10:57 a.m. Feb. 15 that involved a handgun.

According to a criminal complaint filed before District Judge Michael Faulkner, John Betz, 49, of Macungie, and Gary Verdonik, 47, of Center Valley, pulled into a parking lot in the 5600 block of Tilghman Street, Upper Macungie Township, after a road rage incident on the off-ramp of Route 22 West.

Police say after exchanging words, Verdonik allegedly struck Betz with a closed fist causing an injury.

Betz’s adult son, a passenger in his father’s vehicle, allegedly exited the vehicle and pointed a handgun at Verdonik.

The two men ceased contact and police were called.

An investigation was opened into the matter and it was determined the elder Betz was not licensed to carry a firearm.

Betz was charged with carrying a firearm without a license.

He was arraigned and released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

Verdonik was charged with simple assault and harassment.

This case will be prosecuted by the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, police say.
