Swimmers conclude year
For the Whitehall swim teams, it was all about the time.
The Zephyrs recently concluded their season at the PIAA District 11 Swimming Championships at Emmaus and Parkland High Schools. Although they won’t be sending anyone to the state championships at Bucknell, the Zephyrs had plenty to be proud. The girls finished fifth and the boys were 10th at the meet.
“We just missed sending some swimmers to states as they barely missed the cutoff,” said head coach Pete Rile. “But we had our best overall meet in while. They did an incredible job in shaving their times.
“We had a few swimmers who cut more than five seconds over their times. We had a number of great performances over the two days.”
Individually, Dan Jablonski recorded a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle and a sixth-place finish in the 200 free, both of which were new school records. Jordan Rivera also set a new school record in the 100 breaststroke with his sixth-place finish.
Jablonski teamed with Ziyad Khafagy, Felix Figueroa, and Mike Haggerty also set a new school record in the 400 medley relay with their eighth-place finish.
On the girls side, Mairead Doyle finished second in the 50 free, and Steph Setar was fifth and Alexus Merkert was sixth in the 100 fly.
Doyle and Sullivan, and Setar teamed with Alexus Merkert to take fourth in the 400 medley relay. Doyle and Sullivan were also part of a fifth-place 200 free relay team with Marth Giletto and Hope Millet.
The duo also teamed with Setar and Merkert to gain a fourth in the 200 medley relay.
“Overall, we medaled in eight events,” said Rile. “We were very pleased with our performance. We just didn’t qualify anyone for states.”
The Zephyrs will be looking for an infusion of young talent to help with a transition next season. Doyle, Merkert, and Sullivan will be moving on along with Haggerty and Figueroa.
For the meet season, the girls finished 13-5, while the boys were 7-9.
“We lose four of our top five girls’ scorers and two boys,” said Rile. “We have to make up an awful lot of points and it will be tough to replace. We will have a number of swimmers who broke through late in the season back for next year.
“We are hoping for a good freshman class to come in and help with our numbers. We also should be helped by our rotating schedule next year.”
