School district prepares for capital projects

In preparation for major capital projects, the Parkland School Board has approved proposals for professional services from various outside firms.

At a recent meeting, Superintendent Richard Sniscak told The Press the district has more than $1 million in work coming up this year.

Alvin H. Butz Inc. was approved to provide construction management services at a cost of $234,758 for oversight of 16 capital projects throughout the district.

USA Architects was authorized to provide architectural services at a cost of $91,945 for capital improvement projects at various Parkland schools.

Sniscak listed jobs that will be undertaken.

At the Ironton and Schnecksville buildings, a regular classroom will be converted for kindergarten use.

The action involves installation of a toilet in the classroom for the kindergarten children at both schools.

Roofing tasks will be done at Orefield and Springhouse middle schools and at Parkway Manor Elementary, and concrete work will be carried out at Fogelsville, Kernsville and Parkway Manor elementary schools.

The pool liner will be replaced at the high school.

Sniscak noted the liner, the original one, is showing its age.

Modular units will be put into place, which will require professional direction, at Jaindl and Fogelsville elementary schools, Sniscak said.

A proposal from Cowan Associates Inc. was approved for civil engineering services at a cost of $27,844.

The firm will survey, design, prepare plans, specifications and bid packages for outdoor work at several elementary schools.

Cowan Associates was also authorized to provide electrical engineering services at a cost of $5,202 for site lighting improvements at Springhouse Middle School.

Sniscak reported the synthetic turf project at the high school has been completed at a cost of $1.3 million.

The field is used for boys and girls soccer and lacrosse, field hockey and physical education classes.

“They are using it already,” Sniscak said.
