Schaf takes D-11 silver
Emmaus senior Lucas Schaf certainly has a past with Bethlehem Catholic’s Joey Gould.
The two met earlier this season, with Schaf coming out victorious due to an injury default by Gould. Gould beat Schaf three times a junior, but Schaf got the all-important victory when the duo met up in last year’s state tournament.
Unfortunately for Schaf, the latest chapter in that rivalry went Gould’s way. After the Emmaus senior won his first three matches as the No. 1 seed in Friday and Saturday’s District 11 Class 3A individual tournament, Schaf fell in the final bout to Gould by way of an 8-5 decision at 132 pounds.
“I came in as the No. 1 seed, so I pretty much expected to win it,” Schaf said after placing fourth in last year’s tournament. “But it didn’t end the way I wanted it to.
“I knew that the match could go either way. I just had to wrestle mine. He wrestled pretty well and got the win.”
The match figured to come down to the final period, and that was certainly how it played out. With Schaf needing a takedown to gain the lead, he took his shot late in the third period inside Liberty’s packed gymnasium. Unfortunately, Gould was there to defend it perfectly.
It was just Schaf’s third loss of the season.
“There was like 30-some seconds left, and I cut him to try and get the takedown to give me the lead by one,” Schaf said. “But I took a bad shot and he countered for two.”
As he heads into regionals as the No. 2 seed from District 11, Schaf will be working on a number of areas of his game to hopefully make another deep run. One of those aspects in particular haunted him in that finals match.
“I have to work on my leg defense a little better, and then not taking bad shots and getting countered,” Schaf said. “Most of the kids that take me down counter off of my bad shots. I have to work on that.”
Prior to that finals match, Schaf coasted through the winner’s bracket. He opened the tournament with a 16-0 technical fall over Pocono Mountain West’s Alphonso Lee and then drew a major decision (10-1) against Pocono Mountain East’s James Benjamin.
Schaf picked up win No. 35 on the season against Pleasant Valley’s Jason Jacobi via fall in the semifinal round Saturday.
“I felt pretty dominant up until the finals match, obviously,” Schaf said. “I feel like I wrestled pretty well until then, but I’m obviously going to have to step it up for next week.”
Dan Oberle was the other Emmaus grappler to medal at last week’s district tournament. After a bye in the first round, Oberle, the No. 2 seed at 195 pounds, picked up a major decision over Liberty’s Andrue Velazquez, 11-3, before falling to Becahi’s Jody Crouse in the semifinals round.
Oberle met up with Velazquez again in the fifth-place match with an opportunity at regionals on the line, and once again Oberle proved his dominance with a 5-0 decision.
Tyler Corpora rounded out Emmaus’ medal winners on Saturday, capturing sixth place in the 138 pound field. He won his first two matches-a 10-0 major decision against Southern Lehigh’s Paul Zinck and a 2-1 tiebreaker 2 decision over Parkland’s Lee Todora. He then dropped his semifinals match against No. 1 seed Sammy Sasso of Nazareth by fall before falling to East Stroudsburg South’s Pierre Liciaga in the fifth-place bout.
This week’s Northeast Regional Class AAA bracket will be held at Liberty High School once again on Friday and Saturday.
