John F. “Fritz” Yeakel, 84, of Allentown, formerly of West Hazleton, died Feb. 22, 2016, in his home.

He and his wife Joyce A. (Reinmiller) Yeakel were married 60 years last Dec. 3.

Born Dec. 7, 1931, in West Hazleton, he was the son of the late John D. and Ida (Pfromn) Yeakel.

He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

A safety and health coordinator at PPL, Allentown, for 38 years, he retired in 1990.

He was a member of Jordan United Church of Christ, South Whitehall.

A volunteer at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for many years, he also was a former PIAA Basketball official and commissioner for the Anthracite Basketball League and a 60-year member of the Hazle-Azalea Fellowship Lodge, Hazleton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Cheryl A., wife of David S. Hart Sr. of Florida, Pamela J., wife of Donald Hedish of Coopersburg; grandchildren Kaitlin Pill and Evan Hart; great-grandson Colton; step-grandchildren Lisa Wozniak and David Scott Hart Jr.; step-great-grandchildren Scott and Ciera; several nieces and one nephew.
