Stantec representative provides options for Troxell building

At the Feb. 16 Parkland School Board meeting, Michael Thompson, from the Stantec consulting firm, presented several options for the Troxell building if the board chooses not to renovate it.

Renovation, labeled Option 1, comes with a $33 million to 35 million price tag.

For Option 2, Thompson said the older section of the building could be demolished and the wing on the southern side retained.

Under this plan, a new building would be placed along Albright Avenue and connected to the salvaged portion at a cost of between $37 million and $39 million.

Option 3A prescribes total demolition of Troxell with a new building to the rear at a cost ranging from $26 million to $28 million.

Option 3B also provides for a new building but includes subdivision of the property and sale of the existing Troxell structure.

Thompson reported this avenue would cost between $22 million and $24 million.

Option 4-1 provides for construction of a major addition to the Parkland Administration Building along Springhouse Road, South Whitehall.

This would provide space for the curriculum, instruction and professional development offices and alternative education programs now located at Troxell.

The cost would be $8.2 million.

Option 4-2 prescribes relocation of operations functions, transportation and central storage to new facilities constructed on the eastern side of Stadium Drive at a cost of $9 million.

The latter options include selling Troxell and returning the site to the tax rolls.

Thompson offered one final remark.

“You can demolish the building and keep the green space or sell it off,” he said.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rodney Troutman commented on what will happen next.

“The board will have to ponder these options. It will be about five years out,” Troutman said. “First is redistricting, a potential new elementary school and finances.”
