Lillian M. McCarthy, OLPH founding member
John J. Freeh Sr., 94, of Upper Saucon Township, died Feb.12, 2016. He was a son of the late Charles M. and Catherine Jamann Freeh. He was the husband of the late Mary T. Kilgour Freeh for 57 years.
He was an honors graduate of Lehigh University, BSEE, class of 1951.
He was an electronic technician’s mate, 2nd class radio tech, U.S. Navy, and was in the South China Sea during World War II.
He was an electrical/mechanical maintenance superintendent in the Saucon division, Bethlehem Steel, from which he retired after 43 years. He then was an adjunct professor at Northampton County Community College.
He was a member of Assumption BVM, Colesville, where he sang in the choir, taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes and was an Eucharistic Minister.
He was a charter member of two Knights of Columbus councils, was a past president of the Holy Name Society in the Northampton Deanery, Diocese of Allentown and was a founding member of Lehigh University’s Newman Center. He was a life member of the Beethoven Maennerchor, Leithsville. He was in the Lehigh University Alumni Home Club. He was on the Upper Saucon Township Planning Commission. He was a past president of the Citizens for Educational Freedom, Pennsylvania chapter, and the Catholic Professional Men’s Association. He was an Association of Iron and Steel Engineers national director.
He is survived by his five children, John J. Jr. and his wife Alice, Mary Beth and Susan Freeh, Kathy and her husband Thomas Farris, and Ann Zang and her husband Cletus of Texas; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six sisters and brothers, Joe Freeh of Okla., Elizabeth Linville of Calif., William Freeh of Md., The Rev. Vincent T. Freeh, MSC, of New York and of Pa., James H. and his wife Alice Freeh and Regina and her husband Robert Clawson; and nieces and nephews.
