Grant Leroy White

Grant Leroy White, 88, formerly of Slatington, died Feb. 13, 2016, in Cedarbrook Nursing Home, South Whitehall.

Born June 3, 1927, in Shillington, Berks County, he was the son of the late Leroy and Miriam Mae (Musser) White.

He graduated from Shillington High School where he served as class president and captain of the football team.

A founding member of Boy Scout Troop 66, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

He faithfully and honorably served his county in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A graduate of Penn State University with a degree in landscape architecture, he started his Christmas tree and landscape business named Pine Meadows and later White Christmas Farm in Slatington.

He taught mathematics and science in the Parkland School District from 1952 until 1965 when he was awarded “Teacher of the Year” for his work in developing The “Jungle” Environmental Lab.

He developed the Lehigh County Cultural Center in the Old Lehigh County Courthouse.

While employed at PPL, he established the Montour Preserve and was instrumental in starting the Lehigh Gap Nature Center and the Northern Lehigh Historical Society.

His survivors include children Debra A. Barr and her husband, Dennis, of Allentown, Rory E. of Larkspur, Colo., Kristine A. Sweitzer and her husband, Richard, of Emmaus, Jeffrey G. and his wife, Judy, of Allentown, Gregory K. and his wife, Beverly, of Catasauqua; brother Gerald of South Carolina; and six grandchildren.

He was predeceased by siblings Joyce Kerling and Donald White.

A private celebration of his life will be held April 2.
