Board discusses camp programs
Township Secretary Brenda Norder reorted at the supervisors’ Feb. meeting, the North Whitehall Township offices would be closed Feb. 15 for Presidents Day.
Also, the joint meeting between supervisors and the planning commission will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23.
She also noted tires will not be accepted at the recycling center until April 1.
A short discussion was held concerning the summer camps the township sponsors each year.
Bartlett said there was a continuous decline in enrollment since 2010.
Some programs may be discontinued and only the most popular would be reinstated.
Field hockey, baseball, cheerleading and boys basketball were the most popular, with football and softball lagging behind. Decisions on the future of the program will be made at a later date.
Scouts from the Neffs Boy Scout Troop attended the meeting to learn about local government.
Supervisor Steve Pany gave them an outline of what township government includes and what its responsibilities are to the residents.
In other business, the board granted Parkland Hollow subdivision an extension of time until April 5, to appear before them.
The Act 101 recycling program performance grant was approved by the Department of Environmental Protection and the township will receive $15,755 from the state.
This reflects the 1,529 tons of recyclables generated by the township for the 2013 calendar year.
Township Manager Jeff Bartlett noted there might be some reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the snow removal related to the Jan. 23 snowstorm.
This money would pay for some of the expenses involved in maintaining the roads at the time.
Bartlett also noted that township ordinance requires that all sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice. Failure to do so will result in prosecution.
The missing link, a pre-built bridge, in the Ironton Rail Trail has been shipped, Bartlett said.
Several residents commended the board for their snow removal; cleanup of some properties and the township crew’s work on the Ironton Rail Trail project.
