8 DAYS A WEEK Your look ahead at Valley Arts
State Theatre “Broaday Series”: The national-touring production of “42nd Street,” the quintessential backstage musical comedy classic, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 and 4, State Theatre for the Arts, Easton. “42nd Street,” with a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, lyrics by Al Dubin and music by Harry Warren, is based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 Hollywood film adaptation. “42nd Street” tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer, who leaves her Allentown home and goes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical, “Pretty Lady,” during the Great Depression. “42nd Street” is a song and dance fable of Broadway and the American Dream with some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re In The Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” “Dames,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and, of course, “42nd Street.” The 1980 Broadway production, produced by David Merrick, directed by Gower Champion and orchestrated by Philip J. Lang, received the Tony Award for Best Musical and became a long-running hit. A 2001 Broadway revival won the Tony for Best Revival. The production at the State Theatre is part of the “Butz Celebrates Broadway Series.” Tickets: State Theatre Box Office, 453 Northampton St., Easton; statetheatre.org, 1-800-999-STATE, 610-252-3132

The animated children’s television show, produced by The Fred Rogers Company, debuted on PBS in 2012 and was renewed for a third season in 2015.
