Joseph G. Benko, 89, of Coplay, died Jan. 20, 2016, at home. He was the husband of the late Theresa (Kropf) Benko.

Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late George and Mary (Laky) Benko.

He was in the U.S. Navy.

He was an electrician at Bethlehem Steel for more than 30 years.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Coplay, where he was in the Holy Name Society and on the pierogie-making crew.

He was a member of Northampton Liederkranz, Northampton V.F.W., Coplay American Legion, Coplay Saengerbund, Northampton Hungarian Hall, West Coplay Maennerchor and the Augen meiner, of Allentown.

He was a member of Young at Heart Senior Group and was active with Coplay Crime Watch.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph C. and his wife Linda of Catasauqua and Robert of Jessup; a daughter, Joanne M. and her husband Michael Sodl of New Ringgold; six grandchildren, Michelle, Janice, Michael, Emily, Alyssa and Steven; five great-grandchildren, Cale, Kendra, Andrew, Cora and Joseph “JD” Davis; a brother, John “Mike” Benko of Limeport; and two sisters, Irene Bear of Allentown and Stella Becker of Stroudsburg.

He was predeceased by a son, John Michael Benko; a sister, Mary Sabatino; and a brother, Alfred Benko.
