Goodwill’s oldest employee turns 90

It was a big week for Christine Bachman.

On Jan. 18, she celebrated her 90th birthday and just a few days after her birthday, she observed her 22nd work anniversary with Goodwill.

When most people think about retiring and not working, Bachman applied for a job and started a second career at Goodwill, a nonprofit that provides job training, employment placement and other community programs for people with disabilities.

In 2004, Bachman was 68 when she started working at Goodwill.

Bachman, who works part-time Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Goodwill Store and Donation Center, 7720 Main St., Fogelsville, is Goodwill Keystone Area’s oldest employee.

“Chris is an amazing person,” said Goodwill store manager Donna McElvenney. “She is a ball of energy and a positive and great person to be around.

“She doesn’t stop moving from the moment she gets here.”

A former cosmetic specialist at Hess’s Department Store, Allentown, Bachman always had an eye for style.

“A neighbor who used to wear cute outfits told me she shopped at Goodwill,” Bachman said. “I decided to go and check it out, but instead of shopping, I ended up getting a job.”

When she was a teenager, she played drums in an all-girl band.

The band played three nights a week for three years at local clubs and each night they opened with the same song, “A Pretty Girl is like a Melody.”

That song continues to be her anthem.

“I don’t feel like I’m 90,” she said. “I still like to be modern.”

Today, Bachman likes to help shoppers find and choose clothes and housewares to fit their budgets.

She encourages her fellow seniors to “dress modern and not to dress like an old lady.”

Staff at the store surprised her with gifts and cake on her birthday.
