Wyalusing wins Duals

In a repeat performance from last season, Wyalusing Valley took home top honors at the annual Zephyr Duals by outlasting Emmaus 33-27 last Saturday.

Wyalusing emerged as the champs after defeating the Green Hornets in the title match, giving the Rams their third championship at the Zephyr Duals.

Last year they defeated Emmaus 41-33 to capture their second crown. Their first title came in 2002 when they defeated Whitehall in the finals, claiming the trophy on criteria (they won more individual bouts after the match ended tied at 33.)

The Rams and Hornets each won seven bouts, but Wyalusing won the title by earning more bonus points, registering three falls, a technical fall, and major decision in those wins.

In the 20th installment of the Duals, 15 teams converged on Whitehall, including Emmaus, East Stroudsburg South, Southern Lehigh, Quakertown, Muncy, Northwestern Lehigh, Northern Lehigh, Bangor, Catasauqua, Hughesville, William Allen, Blue Mountain, Wyalusing, Mahanoy and Whitehall.

The other top five finishers were Northwestern Lehigh who defeated Muncy Junior-Senior High School in the consolations to capture third, while Quakertown nailed down the fifth spot with a 42-29 win over Northern Lehigh.

Whitehall finished the tourney 0-4.

Head coach Tim Cunningham said that once again Whitehall Athletic Director Robert Hartman and his staff did an excellent job hosting the annual tourney. They begin preparations Friday evening as they roll out the mats that will see four simultaneous bouts occurring on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. From that point it’s non-stop action until the champ is crowned around 6:00 p.m. that day.

“The tournament was once again very successful with good competition as well as very well run by our Athletic Director Bob Hartman,” said Cunningham.
