U.L. Historical Society celebrates holidays with candy, cookies at Schneck House
In preparation for the holidays, the Upper Lehigh Historical Society had a cookie and clear toy candy sale recently at the Schneck House Route 873, Schnecksville.
Visitors came from throughout theValley to purchase a memory from the past in the form of clear toy-shaped candies and cookies made from old-fashioned recipes.
Available as lollipops or free-standing pieces, the candies were made by historical society member Suzanne Wainwright-Evans.
She used molds from her collection of over 500 interesting pieces from rocking horses to cannons.
Wainwright-Evans, of Slatington, is an entomologist by trade.
For her, candy making is an avid hobby.
“I simply do [it] for the enjoyment,” she explained.
For years, Wainwright-Evans has donated her candies as a fundraiser for the historical society.
The turnout for this year’s fundraiser was unprecedented and her tasty works of art sold out quickly.
“I feel so bad having to turn people away,” said Wainwright-Evans. “I used 70 pounds of sugar to make candy for today.”
Wainwright-Evans explained that with the exceptionally warm November and December 2015 weather, she was fortunate to be able to cast as much candy as she did.
“Many days, it has just been too humid to make them,” she said.
Those who missed out on the candy this year still had the opportunity to step inside the Schneck House and take a journey into the past.
The two-story log home includes an authentic stone pavilion and pre-Industrial Revolution furnishings.
According to the historical society, the 1798 local tax roll showed the Schneck House was one of two log homes owned by the Schneck family, whose descendants established the town of Schnecksville in 1840.
The house, which has undergone many changes over the years, is continuously being restored to its original glory.
In 1989, the challenge began to save the log home due to the construction of a shopping center.
It was eventually relocated from the west side of Route 873 to its current location on the east side just across from Weis Market.
Its upkeep and preservation has been the undertaking of the non-profit Upper Lehigh Historical Society since 1994, which was formed to care for the Schneck House property and to promote educational opportunities for the larger community.
The historical society is in need of new members and volunteers to help with care of the Schneck House, its grounds, fundraisers, and educational programs.
