Police officer in crash Parts stolen from vehicles

Upper Macungie Township police say South Whitehall Township Police Officer Colin D. Beaumont, 25, was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer police cruiser when it struck a 2004 Hyundai Sonata driven by Kate A. Kitz, 39, of Orefield, 11:03 a.m. Jan. 9.

Police say the crash occurred at the intersection of Springhouse Road and Walbert Avenue, South Whitehall Township.

According to police, Beaumont, with active emergency lights and sirens operating, was in pursuit of a retail theft suspect fleeing in a vehicle.

Beaumont was attempting to make a left turn from Springhouse Road onto westbound Walbert Avenue when his cruiser lost traction on the wet road sliding into the Hyundai.

Neither Beaumont nor Kitz, who were wearing their seat belts, were injured.

A 6-year-old passenger, in a child safety seat in the Hyundai, was also not injured, police say.

The left rear corner of the Explorer and the front of the Hyundai had disabling damage.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Upper Macungie Township police say catalytic converters and exhaust pieces were stolen sometime between Dec. 26, 2015, and Jan. 8 from three vehicles parked at HT Lyons Inc., 7165 Ambassador Drive, Upper Macungie Township.
