Coplay: Borough seeks snow-shoveling helpers

A reminder that the borough is taking the names of persons, usually youngsters, who will shovel snow from sidewalks in the borough.

Residents wanting their sidewalks cleared of snow and ice, usually seniors, can contact the borough office for such help.

Coplay Public Library continues its varied fundraising activities. The current fundraiser is a pierogy sale. Orders are being taken at the Fifth and Center streets location.

For additional library news, the library board meets 7 p.m. this evening, Jan. 14, in borough council chambers at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St.

The final Christmas tree pickup by borough public works personnel is tomorrow, Jan. 15.

The borough says artificial trees can be placed out for disposal during your scheduled recyclable materials pickup.

A Frosty 5-K Fun Walk/Run will take place 10 a.m. Jan. 16 beginning at Saylor Park, 245 N. Second St. Registration starts 9 a.m.

The race is part of a Northampton Area High School DECA community service project started by Kate Gogel.

Race-day festivities include food, drinks, s’mores and a basket raffle.

The walk/run benefits Ironton Rail Trail. You also can help support Northampton Area Food Bank by bringing a canned soup.

Coplay Sports Inc. is thinking spring. The organization will have baseball and softball sign-ups for ages 5-14 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 23 and 30 at Coplay Sports Field House, located on Potter Terrace.

Other sign-up dates are 6-7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 and 10.

Traffic at Coplay News & Bait Store this past Saturday was much busier than the shop experiences on the first day of trout season.

This time, people came into the store to purchase tickets for the mega near-billion-dollar Powerball lottery. The store enjoys a reputation of having big lottery winners.

With people removing Christmas wreaths, along with small American flags, from plots at the two cemeteries, Coplay American Legion Post 426 said it has a decorative former mailbox in front of its South Second Street quarters where the public can dispose of the worn and tattered flags.

Coplay Community Days will begin planning for the 2016 weekend event Jan. 25 at borough council chambers.

Steve Burker continues to be at the helm of the community-orientated group.

Proceeds of the event helps a variety of projects in the borough.

Coplay's brand-new gazebo was lighted for the holiday season. The gazebo is the centerpiece of the borough's community plaza, a vacant strip of land next to Giant Food Store. According to Councilman Stephen Burker, the gazebo is a gift to the borough from its Community Days celebration. “Many volunteers helped make this possible,” said Burker.
