EHS wrestlers place second

For the second straight season, Emmaus earned a spot in the Zephyr Duals championship match. For the second straight year, a very good Wyalusing team edged the Hornets for the championship trophy.

“Overall you can’t be upset about it,” said Emmaus head coach Jeff Arbushites. “We lost to a quality team, very well coached, very well conditioned. They were physical in the finals.”

Despite winning seven bouts in the championship match, the Hornets gave up bonus points to Wyalusing in five of the seven bouts they lost and fell 33-27.

Emmaus took an early lead on Wyalusing when Peyton Brown opened the match with a pin at 106 then Jackson Karrat earned a decision to put his team ahead 9-6 after the 120-pound match, but the Hornets fell behind 16-9 after losses in the next two bouts.

Luke Franco and Lucas Schaf won back to back bouts at 138 and 145 to get their team within a point at 16-15. But the Rams answered with a technical fall and a pin to take an 8-point lead.

Matt Hamati stopped the bleeding with a decision win at 170 and Dan Oberle pinned his Wyalusing opponent, making the score 30-24 in favor of the Rams with two matches left.

The Hornets Miguel Galarza picked up a win at 220 but the Rams’ Dawson Otis earned a decision win at 285 to seal the win.

Emmaus beat Southern Lehigh, Quakertown and a surging Northwestern team to earn its place in the title match.

Arbushites said it took a team effort to get to the title match again. But he singled out Lucas Schaf for bumping up weight classes in order to help his team on Saturday at Whitehall’s annual tournament.

“Lucas Schaf went up two weights against the other teams better kids just for matchup purposes for us,” said Arbushites. “He’s really wrestling at the top of his game. He’s on a progression to peak at the right time. I’m pretty excited.”

Heading into this week Emmaus was listed at 7-2 overall and in sixth place in the District 11 Class 4A team rankings, which would be good enough for a spot in team districts next month.

With the Garden Spot Invitational coming up next weekend and few more league matches before the postseason begins, Arbushites likes the way his team is shaping up so far in the 1015-16 season.

“We take it one match at a time,” he said. “I think we have a quality team and belong (in team districts) in the end. But we’ve got to wrestle one match at a time and see where we go.

“We have a long way to go. It’s a grind in January. The goal is to stay healthy and stay focused.”
